Foundation Portfolio Evaluation

1.) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our film can be compared and contrasted to two major intruder films, ‘When a Stranger Calls’ and ‘Scream’, two films about a young girl enjoying an evening in, babysitting/watching a movie who has an uninvited visitor trying to kill her. Our film follows a similar storyline in that we have a young teenage girl receiving mysterious phone calls. We chose to go down this story line because we know that having a babysitter/vulnerable teenage girl home alone is a tried and tested route which, if we were undertaking the whole film, would make us a lot of money. Working titles are a fan of using the tried and tested route of romcoms, having the underdog win the girl’s heart e.g. ‘Wimbledon’, ‘Bridget Jones’. So we know that it would be ok.

Originally, in our three minute long version, we were going to set the scene and location of an isolated, scary house by having a long, establishing shot of the house. Then we would have the intruder walking all the way up to the house, to create mystery and speculate who the camera ‘eyes’ were. As time wouldn’t allow us this luxury, we had to cut it short, but this establishing shot is used in ‘When A Stranger Calls’ at the beginning to add a scary, foreboding atmosphere to the film, and emphasise the isolation of the house.


Scream and our film both start with a black screen. This allows mystery to be built up and the audience to wonder what is to come. We chose to start our film like this because we felt it was most effective of the films we watched to build anticipation and grab our attention. We felt ‘When a Stranger Calls’ starting straight away was too sudden and didn’t give the audience much time to think about the film or build a reaction to the nothingness.


We then chose a font and effect called ‘fridged’ for our credits. It is blue and white and wiggles. The blue and white writing is also used in Scream. We chose to copy this colour scheme because we felt the blue was a cold colour and helps add uneasiness to the atmosphere of our film. Although ‘Dolls’ uses white writing which is different to ours because they wanted to emphasise the pureness of the china doll faces and reinforce this subconsciously into the audiences minds to start to freak them out.
We chose to keep the background black as we felt the mystery of the unknown was allowed to be shown and it helped to carry on adding to the spooky atmosphere. We picked this up in our research of ‘Scream’ and ‘Dolls’. When watching them we felt it left us scared as the darkness was a sense of the unknown and anticipation as we waited that little bit longer in suspense of what was to come next.

Some titles came up on a black screen, ‘Scream’ and ‘Dolls’, while others came up with action in the background. ‘When A Stranger Calls’ has their title in red while on an establishing shot of the isolated house. Our first plan was to reproduce it like this to emphasis the isolation of the house and girl but time would not allow us to do this, so we put it a little further on, when the babysitter is on the phone talking to the parents. This emphasis the fact she is completely alone and isolated.



All the films we analysed had scary, tension building music running through the opening credits. There were two main instruments used, piano and/or violins. ‘Scream’, had a bold piano piece at the beginning of the credits which lead on to the screen going black and scary thumping music starts which then fades into phone ringing. ‘When A Stranger Calls’ uses violins which are daunting and build anticipation and tension. For our film, we chose to use a piano piece which leads on to violins. It was more a case of what we could find to fit the clip, but it works well because it has harsh plopping notes then screeching of violins. Using either the piano or the violin piece meant the music would not have been thick enough for our film and there would not have been enough tension.


To emphasise the phone call, we showed a close up of the telephone and the girl picking it up. This highlights the point that it is not just a normal phone call but that there is something odd going on. We picked this idea up from ‘Scream’ when the girl picks up the phone. It is a normal activity but the close up shot and such attention to it subconsciously makes the audience feel as if there is something not right about the caller.

‘Scream’ goes straight into the mystery caller. The girl and the man have a chat and a laugh. This emphasises the girl’s naivety and shows her being vulnerable. Where as ‘When a stranger calls’ has several phone calls beforehand with just breathing on the other end. This helps build anticipation and you are left wondering if it is a prank caller or not which builds apprehension. We chose to go with the second idea of having heavy breathing first as we felt this had the best effect of building suspense for our audience.

All our research films showed the victim doing ordinary things, popping popcorn, sitting down etc, so we decided that our character would be watching TV. Because we felt it meant our audience could relate to the character which would help them build more emotion for the character.


2.) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our main character you see in our clip is Jess. She is a pretty standard character in horror films, a young, vulnerable teenage girl. There are versions of her in ‘Scream’ and ‘When a stranger calls’















She is a young brunette who clearly cares about her appearance and fashion. She is wearing jeans, a sloganed t-shirt and cardigan which adds to the mis en scene. It shows she does not get dressed up for babysitting but still cares about her appearance like nearly every teenage girl in the world. We chose to portray her like this so that girls can relate to her as she is, ‘the norm’, and a fairly average character. This would mean that more viewers are attracted to watch our film as they can relate to the character and find her appealing. Although Jess was dressed in an Abercrombie and Fitch t-shirt, which could isolate a lot of people who don’t have/can’t afford/aren’t encapsulated by the clone fashion of this brand. This could mean that people don’t like her because of the image this brand portrays, but we took this risk and decided it would do more for the character than for her to wear a non label t-shirt.

We chose Jess to be a young, girl babysitting as for many teenage girls this is a very standard job. If we had chosen a boy it would have alienated a lot of people as women tend to be the more maternal sex and babysitting is more of a recognised job for girls.
We used a grand, more materialistic house to do our filming in, as we felt this helped the girl feel isolated in the house. This, we believed could allow other babysitters to relate to her, as they have turned up in houses which are very materialistic and embrace all the modern technology that can be bought. Also, this house can relate to people whose houses are actually furnished like this, and have everything they want and need.

If we used an American actress then this would have meant it would appeal to the American market much more, and would have made a lot more money.


3.) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

‘Brain Damage Films’ would be a good distributer as they specialise in horror films. They distribute worldwide, although solely on the internet. This is a new and upcoming form of media to view on computers, so this would be effective. Selling on the internet would mean we have a huge market audience as an estimated 1,596,270,108 (http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm) people use it, so we have a larger audience potential.

Warner Bros would be a good distribution route as they have dealt with many other horror films already, ‘One Missed Call’ and ‘Murder by Numbers’. So they will have connections and know the best route to take for distribution. They are an American company, so have lots of connections with influential people. Although, I don’t think our film would make it big in America as it has not used any American actors and is very British. For these reasons I think ‘Working Title Films’ would be a better distributer for our film, as they have more English connections, with their parent company being ‘Universal Studios’ and ‘BBC Film’. Or if not working titles, then ‘Film4’, as they don’t focus on broadcasting blockbusters but aim for a more niche and highbrow market. They have their own TV channel which shows a mixture of old and new independet, art house, British, foreign language and specialist cinema.

If the rest of the film was amazing and we thought it was a blockbuster our film could been shown in a Imax cinema, as they have played many of our genre before, ‘My Bloody Valentine’. This would mean we have a fairly wide audience and more people would be interested in coming to view our film because it is ‘new technology’. Although if we didn’t feel it would do so well, it could be kept to an art house, but this only gives us a niche market rather than a mass audience, which isn’t really what we want as we want to accrue as much money as possible!

To get it on to DVD or if we were to go straight into DVD sales, we would probably go with the ‘Maverick Entertainment Group’, as they are a ‘leading distributor of independent film’. They offer ‘guaranteed domestic distribution’. This would mean we are guaranteed to make and distribute our film to be sold which is ultimately what we want.


4.) Who would be the audience for your media production?

Like most horror films, I believe our target market is older teenagers to late 20’s, as some scenes later on might not be very child friendly. It should have a certificate 15 because it is fairly spooky and certain scenes might scare a child, e.g. the babysitter being watched through the window. Also older adults won’t be as interested in scaring themselves the way teenagers and young adults do, so they won’t be as interested in the film.

I believe that it will be mainly girls who watch our film over guys as the main character is a girl, so the female audience will relate to her. Also there isn’t much gore, torture; car chases etc, which appeals to males. We chose to appeal to girls more than guys because everyone in the group was a girl, so it was easy for us to know what we felt was scary and what would work to manipulate our senses to give us a fright.

Although, I would say the film is open to both boys and girls, not to reduce our market and keep our profits to a maximum.


5.) How did you attract/address your audience?

In our Media class we shared our ideas for our film and we told each other if we thought it would work or not and how we could improve our ideas and plans.

To address our audience we have used a standard actress who many people can relate to. She is moderately ordinary in jeans and a t-shirt. To attract more people we could have used a more famous actress, but we feel we have ‘discovered’ a new actress who will become famous in the future, with our film as her starting point.
We would attract the audience by the rating because it is a 15 certificate. This would mean that advertising could be placed accordingly for example we wouldn’t put an advert in ‘Girl Talk’ magazine, but it would be better placed in an older persons magazine, and TV advertisements would be after the watershed of 9.00pm

Also, as our target audience was 15+, we got our classmates and fellow peer members to come in at lunchtimes and after school to watch the videos we had made.


6.) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

On our first night of recording we found out the battery wasn’t fully charged in the camera, so had to use it with the power lead. This made things difficult because we couldn’t accomplish all the scenes we wanted to, e.g. the upstairs scene or some of the outside bits. So this has taught me to always check you equipment and make sure everything is working.
I had used a video camera before, but I had never used an apple Mac. So it was all very alien to me. I didn’t even know how you get on the internet or that word was actually script! It took me a while to work out how you use the computer and what all the buttons do as we did not have a lesson or instructions on how to work them. I kept on having to ask how to do things because I didn’t know how. But it has taught me how to work the Macs and all the keyboard shortcuts which is really useful. It was quite exciting learning how to use final cut express and making our very own films. It took me quite a while to work out all the keyboard shortcuts, and I’m sure I doesn’t know them all yet, but they became very useful. The most annoying thing was putting the music over our finished film. There were so many problems here. The sound kept going wrong with it jumping, being cut, getting unsynchronised, and having to ‘write’ the sound every time you moved the clip an mm! This became so frustrating after having completed the film and getting everything perfect.



For music we had quite a few problems. We couldn’t find anything on the first program, so we started searching MySpace. We sent some messages to bands of music we liked, but they failed to reply. So once we couldn’t find anything Mr Van Straten said we could use a programme called garage band. This turned out to be really useful as we found the main background song used throughout our film. Although, it took us about two double lessons to find the correct music. That was frustrating because we couldn’t find anything with the exact genre of music we wanted, and we just scrolled down lots of random pieces.

We also tried to find footsteps and breathing for our clip, but we couldn’t find quite the right thing, so our teacher ended up recording the breathing for us, and we muffled the footsteps!
There were some problems remembering how to import and export the music onto our clip, as you had to send it to iTunes first and then drag it through to our film, but we got there in the end with a bit of playing around and many mistakes.
Live Type was a fairly easy program to use as you just pick your font and effectively type in what you want it to say. It was fun to try all the different effects as there were so many of them. The difficult part was knowing where to put them in your clip so it fitted in just right with the music. They distorted the whole clip and we spent even more time fiddling around with the sound to get it just right again. Also once they were on the clip they seemed to pop up and disappear very quickly, so we spent some time trying different dissolves over the top to make them look more gradual.

Once our clip was on YouTube it was interesting to read the different responses we received from people. We only obtained two comments but one was really useful in helping us promote the clip further and get more views by using a program called Tubeviews. There is another comment from someone who was scared of our film through the music, which proves music is an integral part of the film. They even wanted to watch the rest of our film it was that good, and thought that we should win an Oscar! – Result! When our teacher uploaded it to facebook we also got a useful comment, saying he nearly turned it off but was scared. These sources are good research if we were to develop the film further because we would know the opening is a bit boring, but it does its job – to scare the audience.


7.) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full production?

The preliminary task was a good warm up to the actual two minute film, as this is where I first met the computers and technology which we used. So it was really constructive for me to learn how everything works.

This was our first experience with ‘the line’. We had to keep reminding each other not to cross it, and how to stay within it. It was good practice for when we did our actual film as we had a problem because we had many outside shots. It was hard to keep the line and still film the bits we needed to add the effect of voyeurism. As the door set a definitive line of where we could film.

Also in the preliminary task we were told exactly what we needed to do. Walk along a corridor. Open a door. Have a conversation with someone already in the room. But in the actual film we had to create our own whole new idea which was fairly difficult.

The preliminary task was all about you being in control. You told the actors what to say, how to move and play the part. You chose the camera angles and how you edited the film but in the groups it was a joint decision, and the more dominant people in the group imposed more of their ideas and views rather than listening to everyone else’s, but that is all part if teamwork.

Credits..

These are THE MOST ANNOYING THINGS IN THE WORLD!!!



They are driving up all crazy as to:

-where to put them

-how long they need to be

-what fonts

-what effects etc

There are just so many things to think about for such a small part of the film!!!

They don't really look good anywhere where we put them!

Vicki and i stayed after school to do some research into credits from other horror film e.g .when a stranger calls, scream and many others! It has given us some ideas but we still have a lot of work to do on them!!!

Battle of the Credits!!!

We have spent ages doing our credits over and over again to try and get them perfect!



...but now we have had a little trouble with 'copying' another groups effect!

The effect is 'fridged' (a font and effect) and 'l'gnoto' are using it! but it goes soo well with our film that we just had to use it. Needs to say they are not very happy about it, but it is the effect which best compliments our film! and we don't want to loose marks because our effect doesn't quiet add to the atmosphere of the film and fit with the mis en scene!

COMPLETED FILM!!! : )

Oh my gosh! we have completed our film! It feels soooo good with all the time we have spend on filming, editing, credits etc. I can't believe it's over!



I'm really pleased with the outcome because I think we have ALL worked so hard on it and have put a lot of time and effort into it! It has taught us how to work well in a team and how to compromise and put forward different ideas. It has shown us who are leader, perfectionists and slackers (no one in our group!) in our and also other groups (by just observing them!)



I think our group worked really well together and all our ideas have created an amazing first 2minuets of a film. But i'll let you judge....



FRIDAY...alone

On my Friday free i came into the editing room! It was the Friday after Vicki and I had been filming so I knew what was on the film and what i needed to do! I must admit I'm not very tech savvy so it took me a long time to set up and get started!



Once I was set up I started importing the whole clip we had filmed on the timeline! Which took forever! I thought to do this because you could cut each clip and then choose which one of the copies worked best which would have been quick as we are running out of time!



I have later found out that I should have divided each filming section up into different bit, e.g. corridor pan - Jess's first conversation (parents) - Jess's second conversation (intruder) etc! Which is a bit annoying as this would have saved time and been easier! But it's all part of the learning curve and I now know for next time!

Editing solved!

On Friday Susie and I spent our free editing!



We took major action and cut half the film!!! We chopped the whole of the section when Jess goes upstairs to check on the child for the first time!! (I hope it makes sense!!!)but am sure it does) But now its 1minuet 45seconds which will give us enough time for credits!!

I hope the other two like it!



Once we had radically chopped that part of the clip, Susie and I started some work on the credits! We played around with different effects and fonts to find the best for our film! There aren't really that many but its finding the right one for our genre. We've got one atm for our clip but don't remember what its called. I think it looks good but comes on and exits too suddenly. So we tried it out with some dissolves, which didn't really help much!

Editing!!

OH NO! OH NO! OH NO! our clip is 3minuets long + credits and the maximum it can be is about 2mins 10seconds. We have gone through and cut as much as we can off the beginning and end of the clips!!! This is going to call for drastic action!!!

Music

Music is part of the most important part of the film! With Mrs Fransis we watched a clip from 'Scream' the horror film. First of a clip with music, which built up suspense and anticipation. This scared most of the class. Then we watched the same clip with no music or sound. This clip made the class laugh as we saw their slow motion running and scared faces!



For our film we were only given a few ways to get music for legal reasons.



1.) Our first attempt was to search myspace for bands who made scary music. We only found one band and messaged them, but they never replied. So this was a fairly unsuccessful route



2.) Our second choice was to use ccMixer - But we didn't use this as it didn't relay have anything we were looking for on it!



3.) So our final choice was Garage Band. We all preyed we'd find something as this was our last hope! We tried lots of different clips and really exprimented with layering them over eachother etc. Searching through Leah found a fairly spooky clip which would fit perfectly with our clip, but we all thought it could do with a little more...something, so we carried on searching. Then i found another clip which i though would add to Leah's clip so dragged it up to overlay on Leah's clip. It sounded perfect! really spooky and atmospheric! ...Our bass music was complete !

So, since our first Wednesday nights filming we have been able to start editing on the Thursday! which was quiet exciting because it was such a quick turnover!

On Thursday we started by setting up our own account on the corner computer and we tried to get most of our filming from the camera to the mac. This took a fair amount of time as we had to put in so many inputs and outputs on each clip so we would know which part is which!

The LAST night of filming!!!



So, this night it was just Vicki and me for the camera crew! We did the usual wait until its dark and then we started to film!



Most of the filming was done, so we just needed to get a few scenes which weren't perfect or we hadn't filmed yet. It was done quiet quickly and we were relieved that we'd completed the filming!

Second nights filming!

So once again we met in Tesco car park after games and bundles into the car. But this time the film crew was just Vicki, Susie and me!


So like usual we waited for it to get dark... but just as we were about to start filming my mum came to pick me up and i had to go to work :( . So i didn't end up getting to do any filming but it was left in the capable hands of Vicki and Susie who did some amazing filming, and got lots of it done!





They did all the upstairs filming, jess running up the stairs, in the childs room and the window scenes!


They did some crazy stuff to get the scenes we wanted...






Our first day of filming!

This week we had our first night of filming INTRUDER!


After games we all met in Tescos car park to be picked up by Vicki's grandad! We all bundles inside the car and were on our way to our 'filming location'. When we got there we had to wait for it to get dark as this darkness would add to our mis en scene and was in our planning stages. We contemplated using the darkening filters on the macs at editing stage but decided against it because it was nearly dark anyway so it would just be easier to wait as we would have run out of time trying to film in the light. So we sat around brainstorming our ideas further and planning where and how exactly to filming (e.g. the line/ where the camera must go) and had a general run through of our filming.

All of a sudden it was dark, and we commenced filming. With camera in hand we were off to a wonky start...






We corrected the camera legs and... ACTION (or 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Action as we were told - to allow the camera to fire up and make sure we had enough film either end of our clip in editing)


We filmed the outside beginning shots first. Which is were we had our first problem...well one and a half!



1.) We all thought we would rather have the camera gliding to the house. But as the driveway was gravel it was difficult for us to use wheels e.g. on a skateboard or office chair or anything like that. We contemplated using a car but the turnover from car to walking would just be too difficult for us to line it all up and have the car driving at the same speed etc every time! So we stuck to walking, which is were our second problem cropped up...


1a.) The sound of the footsteps was so loud on the gravel. But we knew in the editing stages we could turn the volume down, meaning it was only a minor blip.



We all had a few goes at walking up to the house so we would get a variety of different peoples shots and we would be able to choose the best version when we were in the editing stages. We had to make sure the camera man ended the shot perfectly in the center of the diamond on the door so it would be easy for us to join up the camera inside the door. This went well and we got the shots done quiet quickly.



So we moved inside to film the camera coming in the door and the babysitters first conversation. From the outside shots, we had to make sure the camera was aligned perfectly on the diamond,of the door which took a bit of time, but we got it perfect in the end!



Suddenly, on filming the corridor pan we came across a dilemmas which we needed to solve, and fast... In our storyboard we wanted the camera to float through the door and glide into the room where the babysitter was sitting watching TV and generally chilling. But when we were tried to put this into motion, we found it was more difficult than we were expecting. There was a massive blip on the floor where it turned from wood to carpet! So putting our thinking caps on, we played around with some ideas to solve the inconvenient bump. There were many ideas thrown in the pot like skateboard and just a person walking with the camera. But in the end we came up with a somewhat improvised idea...



We had Leah lying on the floor (out of view of the camera lens) she pulled the doormat along the wood up to the point of the carpet, were simultaneously, without slowing down or fastening the movement of the camera, Vicki and i would pull the mat all the way through the door and to the point where we could see Jess.




So, we were quick to solve this dilemma, but we went into filming knowing that it's not unusual to find flaws and problems when filming, which is what we found out during our continuity task!


Also we all completely forgot just how long it would take us to film. We thought we would whizz through and get it all filmed in one night! Well, we're not even half way after that nights filming...

Susies desperate housewives idea

Susie came up with a great idea for the begining of our film to create a spooky atmosphere. Hopefully it will really make it look as if there is someone around! Its a camera shot of a scene in Desperate Housewives. The camera comes up the drive and 'fades' through the door into the house.



Mr V did a mock up of what we wanted in the leason today, so we know its possible! It looks brilliant and will really add to the effect of our film

More Brainstorming

After all our brainstorming idea for a plot of our film, and scanning you-tube for ideas, we have decided to plan our idea on a film called 'When a stranger calls'

It involves a babysitter who goes to a isolated house to babysit a little girl...

But in our film, we are only filming the first two minutes...

So we want to start our film with a black screen. Spooky music would start and a wide shot of our house would flash on screen.

Speech

The girl will be sitting on the sofa, talking to the parents, 'Yes he's fine...everything is going great...he's in bed now' You will hear her speaking, but not the parents reply.
Then she goes to check on the child to see if hes OK. On the way downstairs the phone starts ringing and she runs down to answer it. All she hears is a heavy breathing. 'who is this? this isn't funny' she says down the phone but the breathing carries on. She hangs up and carries on watching TV. Then the phone rings again, and all the watcher hears is heavy breathing again 'Seriously who is this. This isn't funny' She says. A creak is heard upstairs 'Go back to bed, Jim' Then a reply on the phone says 'what makes you think its Jim' This freaks the girl out and she runs up to check on the boy in bed.

Brain Storming idea's for our courcework film!

So, for our preliminary idea for our two minuet film, we were going to have two teenage girls going to a party. They would be driving along in their car with r&b music blaring loudly out with the windows down but the plot would turn when they break down in the middle of a woods. They would hear rustling and noises coming from the woods, but the driver would be brave and get out and go and have a look under the bonnet. A few minuets later the girl waiting would call out, with no reply...she would have vanished. At this point the lights in the car would go out, but the fog lights would come on and in front of the car, with the lights shinning on her would be the driver looking like a zombie type figure. Gaunt, pale, bloody. She would be 50meters away. With a few quick cuts and some bangs of the music, she would cut 40, 30, 20 meters away... when, all of a sudden the girl would appear on the bonnet of the car, with no expression on her face. Staring at her friend.

This was such a good idea, until we realised that there were a few problems.

a.) The lighting would be difficult - it would have to be filmed at dusk or put a filter on it when it comes to editing

b.) None of us can drive - so getting a car and driving it would be a problem

c.) Location of filming would be difficult - finding a woods were unlicensed drivers could drive, and there would be enough lighting to film and lots of space.


So...this idea would be difficult to fore fill... it was back to the drawing board to create a better thriller/action/horror film!!!

Ok, so I wanted to write up about our coursework in chronological order on my blog, but on our first filming session I left all my notes at Vicki’s, so I haven't been able to type them up and report on our progress. I have got them today, so will type them up and hopefully have it all done and up to date by the end of the week!

So im the meantime, i found 25 Random Things about Barbie!!! (as its her 50th!!)




1. I’ve been in the fashion biz for 50 years now.

2. But I still don’t look a day over 18.

3. I’ve had super smooth skin my whole life (I know, I'm lucky).

4. I’ve had over 100 jobs and careers, literally.

5. My closet is crazy. I own over 50,000 outfits.

6. I do a lot of modeling, but have never been tall enough to walk a runway.

7. I went to school in New York, but now I live in LA.

8. My feet were simply made for heels.

9. My main squeeze and I have been on-again-off-again for the past 48 years. Now, we’re on again. :)

10. I used to jazzercise in a unitard. Seriously.

11. I’ve been to the moon and back.

12. My philosophy? A great handbag can save any outfit.

13. I’m an animal lover at heart, and I own over 50 pets.

14. I have a serious thing for pink.

15. I never go out without my makeup on.

16. I love, love, love driving fast cars.

17. I’m a big sports fan and have been in the Olympics for gymnastics, figure skating and downhill skiing.

18. The beach is one of my favorite places: Malibu is just dreamy.

19. I still can’t believe I had a whole runway show at NY Fashion Week.

20. I’ve actually been in the military. The pentagon even gave me a seal of approval on my outfit!

21. I change my hairstyle almost as often as my clothes.

22. Over 70 designers have made custom outfits for me.

23. I once played in an 80s rock band. We were kind of a big deal.

24. I have four sisters: Skipper, Stacie, Kelly and Krissy.

Thirty second film!

So, for our introduction and warm up with the cameras, the exam board set us a thirty second exercise which we must do. We don't get marked for the piece itself but if we don't complete it, we get marked down! It had to consist of a person opening a door and coming through it, having a small bit of dialogue with a person already in the room.
To get us started, Mr V showed us a small clip of our task, which the exam board did and explained the concept of crossing the line. This is where, when filming, you must draw an imaginary (straight) line where you have place your camera down where you want your shot, then you must not put your camera anywhere on the other side of the line. Like in bench ball, where you can't cross over to the other persons side.
Then we had to do a story board...



Following the story board, we chose our groups. I went with Jerome and James. We set off filming... and hit the editing on the mac's........

I found this exercise really useful because I thought directors just read the play, then literally ordered whatever came into their heads to be set up for the filming (sounds really daft now) So the story boards were really useful in seeing how it is really done. Also the filming was really fun. The counting to ten before action I found was really absurd but made complete sense! Using the Macs to edit was really weird because I always thought things were taken in one shot, and never knew you could join two shots together in the middle of a scene! Also I’ve never edited so it made it quite fun to learn all the controls!

On one of our first leasons with Mrs Fransis, we learn't about camera angel. We went throught then all, and drew them out for later reference and to help us remember them!


The next leason, she gave us an official sheet with them all on!
